Blog 4 My Professional Growth Plan

My professional goal is to complete this degree in educational leadership and move toward earning a doctoral degree in education. I want to develop my professional learning network whereby I can connect with other professionals using Twitter, micro-blogging to share information on best practices.

It’s important because I can improve classroom learning as long as I my students are equipped to use it at their full benefit. Internet access allows students to conduct comprehensive research and communicate with other education providers beyond the four walls of the classroom. Using computers can also enable me to provide tutoring or personalize instructions for students who need advance or remedial educational resources (Our Everyday Life, 2016).

I will demonstrate a sound understanding of technology and its operations and concepts. As describe in the International Society for Technology Education ISTE National Education Technology Standard for Students.

I will continue to design appropriate learning opportunities that apply technology enhanced instructional strategies to support the diverse needs of learners. Apply technology to develop student’s higher order skill and creativity as well as manage student learning activities in a technology enhanced environment.

Sheninger, (2014) the construction of a PLN enable leaders to harness the power inherent in the twenty-first century technologies to create a professional growth tool that is accessible whenever and wherever necessary.

Finally, in my professional growth is to continue to be an Ambassador for Christ, to spread his gospel to our students by teaching them to use technology with integrity, respect, and honesty. John 2 1:9 stated that “everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.

Public Relations

Public Relations Plan

This week I chose to discuss public relations.  Public relations are very important in education because most of your time is spent interacting with students, parents, teachers, and administrators. Here’s what the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) states that “Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial between organizations and their publics.”

Since school leaders have such a pivotal social role in their local communities, they are in an excellent position to encourage progress and meaningful change (Whitehead, Jensen, Boschee, 2014).  To improve our communication with our stakeholders, I would first incorporate using social media in our schools. Beginning creating a Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, email, and blogs accounts whereby all personnel are kept update to on school’s events.  Training will be conducted in teams using the Personal Learning Network, (Sheninger,2014). The essence of the PLN and collaborative is increased exponentially because of the individual members networking through collaborative technology platform, the is what (Jacobs, 2009). It’s important that educators are effective in being able to communicate with the stakeholders and have transparency, flexibility, and honesty (Sheninger,2014).

That is why my plan will be available to all stakeholders in the district. A monthly report will be given through the district newsletter that can be viewed from the school website (Sheninger, 2014). The reason we will use Facebook is to share current activities happening in the school, such as teacher of the year, student of the month posts and awards. The Twitter post would be for teachers to share different techniques they have implement in their classrooms to assist students with learning. Leaders can use Twitter also to send out meetings reminders to (Parent -Teacher Organizations/Association, Athletic Booster).  (Sheninger,2014, p.80).

One reason to integrate social media into the educational world is to improve communication with your stakeholders. Social media apps and resources have provided educators with a lot of options when communicating with their stakeholders.  (www.edsocialmedia.com) Sharing of this information is free and you can access it from anywhere.  Sheninger (2014) indicates that the time is now, social media provides many free tools that leaders can incorporate into their communication plan (p.78).

Another form of social media is Upstream. Upstream media provides parents, grandparents, friends, and others with a visual media stream. This service is free. When incidents occur whereby families and frees are unable to travel they can use this free service to view graduations, plays, and musical concerts. I will continue to want to have face to face interaction with my stakeholders.

Social networking provided stakeholders with the information quick. Whereas, it can sometimes provide unreliable and false information it is not updated. Students who use social media can think critically about issues and are creative in using it. There are several news reports whereby students have fallen or became victims of bullying.  Today, parents and non-parents are interested in knowing where their tax dollars are being spent. They are inquiring about the quality of their children’s education.

In conclusion, we must incorporate technology in our public relations whereby all stakeholders will have a means to access it. Technology provides educators effective ways to teach and reach different types of students and it’s a way of bonding with all stakeholders.

Proverbs 1:2-5 states that “To know wisdom and instructions, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity, to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth-Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.”

DB 2 The Six Secrets of Change

This week discussion forum I chose to discuss Fullan’s Six Secrets of Change and Potential Roadblocks because I can relate to these experiences in my current profession.  In reading Fullan’s Six Secrets of Change and Potential Roadblocks it obvious that changes must occur in our school system.

“Love Your Employees”. Fullan states that we must love our employees. “loving and investing in our employees in relations to a high-quality purpose is the bedrock of success. The best to love your employees is to initiate trust and support (Fullan, 2014, p.55).

Secret Two- “Connect Peers with Purpose:. Here we find that peer interaction is the key to an optimal organization that is simultaneously tight and loose.  Leadership is very important in this area. We must provide an environment that is conducive to our employees. Hire talent individuals, create a pro=social environment populated by pro-social individuals (Hunt, 2009 p.3). One must ask how are we fostering purposeful peer interaction that create deeper bonds to work and among colleagues?  how are we implementing a balance between outside monitoring and internal efficacy among peers? These are questions for school leaders I suppose.

Secret Three-“Capacity Building Prevails”. Capacity building concerns competencies resources and motivation. As leaders, we must continue to develop capacity in all stakeholders while always anticipating the next course of action.

Secret four- “Learning is the Work”. Fullan states professional development (PD) in workshop, training and courses is only one part to continuous learning and precision in teaching. To be successful leaders must be engaged and provide support to their teachers in the classroom. Also, that digital leadership dictates that learning is first and foremost”.

Secret Five- “Transparency Rules”. When you think about being transparent it involves sharing of information and seeing effective practices, innovation for others to learn from and embracing digital tools which are necessary for success. Work must continue without interruptions.

Fullan’s Six Secret “System Learn” he discusses that learning is continuous, that learning is also dependent on the leaders in the schools. We need to move away from the old way of learning and thinking.

As leaders, it’s our responsibility to provide employees, parents, students, and stakeholders with highest level of service. I have observed my colleagues slowly move towards accepting a new way of thinking and embrace technology.

Introduction

My name is Yonna Billingsley, I am a military spouse. I am pursing a Master degree in Educational leadership. I am in the middle of my educational goals of obtaining this degree.

I currently work for a Federal insurance company whereby, I spend a lot of time traveling and investigating issues that are often very complex. The scripture that I chose and has help me in my field of work is Philippians 4:13. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthen me”. I chose this scripture because it has help me and given me strength through death and in handling complex issues at work.

I enjoy traveling in the United States and abroad, cooking and trying new recipes. I am widower, I have two adult children and one lovely granddaughter who gives me joy.

When I felt I couldn’t move forward God showed me that I could do all things when it becomes impossible. I found joy through the birth of my granddaughter, I found strength through starting a third chapter of my life by going back to school.

I hope to more efficient in the use of technology. I didn’t have a twitter account, I don’t read blogs. So this will be an adventure for me. Finally, if my life was a movie it be the “Preachers wife”. I would play the role of the Whitney House (as the wife) because I am always trying to bring peace in the middle of a storm and bring calmness to everyone. I want to learn as much as I can out of this class.
